Tryouts for the 2024 season

Students who would like to play tennis for Ponte Vedra High School should meet on the school tennis courts on Monday, January 15.  Girls will begin tryouts at 10AM while boys will have the courts at 1PM.  Students who want to tryout should also plan to stay afterschool on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The session will end at 5:30.  All students must be cleared to participate by completing the registration on the PVHS athletic website.  2022-2023-Athletic-Clearance-Instructions.pdf (stjohns.k12.fl.us).   You cannot participate until you are cleared by the athletic department.

Lady Sharks Move Team Record to 5-4 After Weekend at FSU

The Ponte Vedra girls tennis team has posted a 5-4 record at mid season after a weekend of tennis played at the Florida State indoor tennis facility.  The Sharks posted wins over Lake City Columbia and Fort Walton Beach, while falling to Pensacola Catholic.  The Sharks will play their first district match against Clay, then traveling to Episcopal, before taking a week off for spring vacation.

Sharks Tennis Team Scores wins over Leon and Stanton

The Ponte Vedra girls tennis team improved their record to 3-2 with wins over Leon High School and Stanton College Prep, against a single loss to Creekside.  Highlights of the matches include a thrilling split set match won by Elle Stamatogiannakis against Carsyn Kenny of Leon ( 4-6; 6-4; (10-8)).  Claire Olson and Emma Notari also both competed fiercely before losing split set matches in tie-breakers.  Against Stanton, the Sharks were perfect coasting to a cool 7-0 win.  Colette Dwyer (5S) and Emma Greer (4S) posted their initial wins in the singles category.  Mary Mersereau remains unbeaten through five matches, posting a win at Line 3 against Stanton.  After hosting St Augustine, the Sharks will compete in a 4-team weekend tournament at the Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

Sharks win first match over Fleming Island

The Ponte Vedra girls tennis team posted their first win of the season by defeating Fleming Island 6-1.  The team was led by Claire Olson who won at both 1 singles and 1 doubles.  Emma Notari and Ellie Stamatogiannakis also posted two wins in both singles and doubles.  Mary Mesereau remains undefeated at five singles.  Emma Greer earned her first win as a Shark at two doubles with Emma Notari.  The team will be away at Creekside on Feb 20th.

Ponte Vedra Girls Open 2019 Season with a Loss To Bartram Trail

On Feb 12th the Ponte Vedra Sharks opened the 2019 season in a rain-delayed match with the Bartram Trail Bears.  Mary Mersereau was the lone winner in a 6-1 team loss to the bears. The match featured several close and hard fought match-ups.  Mersereau defeated Nicole Jerout  (4-6; 6-4 (10-6)).  Anna Handley lost a marathon match to Dannella Torres that saw three tie breaks (6-7 (9-7); 7-6 (7-3) (10-3)).  Emma Notari (at 3Singles), Elle Stamatogiannakis (2S) and Claire Olson (1S) open the season with hard fought defeats.

Ponte Vedra Girls Tennis Team Defeat Bolles for Region 1 Championship

Ponte Vedra captured the Region 1 championships on Thursday afternoon defeating  Bolles 4 to 3.  Ponte Vedra racked up three wins, including line 1 (Maureen McCormack), line 2(Claire Olson) and line 4 (Katya Kelly).  The Sharks fourth win came in dramtic fashion as the number 1 doubles team of Alyssa Hensley and Maureen McCormack defeated the Bolles team 7-5. 7-6 (7-2) .  The Sharks will advance to the state tournament May 2nd.

1st Singles:  Maureen McCormack (Ponte Vedra)  defeated Elise Ballantyne (Bolles) 6-1, 6-4     2nd Singles: Claire Olson (Ponte Vedra) defeated Lilly Edwards (Bolles)   6-0, 6-2           3rd Singles: Julia Preuss (Bolles) defeated Alyssa Hensley (Ponte Vedra)  7-5, 6-3   4th Singles: Katya Kelly (Ponte Vedra) defeated Isabella Diaz-.  Mira (Bolles) 6-2, 6-0       5th Singles: Meagan Donovan (Bolles) defeated Ellie Stamatogiannakis    6-4,6-2    1st Doubles: Maureen McCormack and Alyssa Hensley defeated Elise Ballantyne and Julia Preuss   7-5, 7-6 (7-2)     2nd Doubles: Claire Olson and Katya Kelly lost to Lilly Edwards and Meagan Donovan 6-3, 6-4

Ponte Vedra Girls Tennis Region 1 District 4 Champions Victorious in Regional Semifinals over Raines

In a suspenseful finals, that had the Sharks facing the Bulldogs at every line, Ponte Vedra girls edged The Bolles School 4-3 to take the district championship.  The final team totals were Ponte Vedra 18, Bolles17, Clay 5, Ridgeview 4, Menendez and Orange Park 2 and Bradford 1.  Claire Olson and Katya Kelly were both district champions at 2 and 4 singles respectively.  Olson and Kelly then teamed up to win the district title at 2 doubles.  Seniors Maureen McCormack and Alyssa Hensley displayed extraordinary mental toughness in a 1-6, 7-5 (10-7) win over the Bolles’ 1 Doubles team.

The district champions faced Raines in a regional semifinal match, winning 4-0.  The Sharks will resume play for the regional title and trip to the state finals in a match on Thursday April 26.

Ponte Vedra Girls finish Tennis Season at 12-2

The Ponte Ve.dra girls regular tennis season ended with victories at Camden County and Clay High and a final record of 12-2.   Maureen McCormack at 1 Singles and 1 doubles with Alyssa Hensley remianed undefeated (12-0/9-0).    The team will host the FHSAA Class 2A district 4 tournament on April 17 and 18.

The Ponte Vedra Sharks best the Nease Panthers 6-1

The Ponte Vedra girls tennis team defeated county rival Nease with a 6-1 score.  Maureen McCormack (Mo) and Claire Olson have been victorious against all county opponents. Mo remains unbeaten with an overall record of 10-0.  Alyssa Hensley, Katya Kelly and Ellie Stamatogiannakis all posted wins, along with the two doubles team of Emma Notari and Anna Handley.  The Sharks will host Ridgeview for senior night on Thursday, April 5th.
